Claverham Rack up Fourth consecutive victory

Claverham maintained their winning streak in sweltering conditions at Henley Lane with a comfortable 7 wicket victory over Uphill Castle.

Having elected to bat first Uphill made a poor start with Paul Bird removing Cooke for 0 in the first over and Davidson soon after for 2.  His speed partner Chris Peyper roared in at the other end and quickly removed Lambert (also 0) and then Perkins for 28 the visitors were struggling at 52 for 4.

Enter Pete Trego the cultured former Somerset star to rescue the situation.  Trego looked in good touch as he found the boundary from his first and second balls faced and went on to score a pleasing 63 before trying to launch skipper Roger Hooper into orbit and falling to a well designed trap (AKA Keith Miles at Cow Corner).

With Trego back in the hutch Uphill faded to 145 all out, the impressive Bird finishing with 4 for 33.

With a strong batting line up Claverham are not afraid to go after small totals with menace, and so it proved with Bird and Peyper taking an early liking to the pace of Trego and O’Sullivan to rack up 50 in only 6 overs.

Chris Peyper had obviously decided this was his day though and launched into a ferocious display of hitting as he marched towards another impressive century (101 no).  His innings came from only 73 balls and included no fewer than 19 boundaries.  Even more impressive was his effort the following day when he rattled up 119 not out to help the Sunday XI defeat a strong Bath side in the Sunday league.

The total was reached in only the 24th over when Mat Davies smashed Perkins back over his head for the winning runs.  Claverham now find themselves battling with Stapleton for third place and sights are once again set on a good run in.

This weekend Claverham visit neighbours Clevedon at Dial Hill for what is sure to be another classic between these old rivals.
