Claverham 165 Westbury 166-7
The wheels finally came off the Claverham juggernaut at the end of a tense and close encounter between two well matched sides.
The visitors made slow and unspectacular progress in ideal batting conditions against a well disciplined attack and by the time the first wicket fell at 25, Rich Horton for 11, 12 overs had been bowled. Paul bird dug in to anchor the innings after Atul had perished for 19 and from that point Claverham lost their way. The classy Bird made 62 in fine style but with only Nigel Cheeseright, 28 and Roger Hooper 14 not out, reaching double figures the tail withered with on over to spare, the final total being some 30 runs short of par.
After a frank exchange of views and a good tea Claverham came out with all guns blazing and, with Bird and Cheeseright giving their absolute all, Westbury struggled painfully to 14 for 2. A sound stand of 63 for the third wicket swung the balance of power away from the visitors and though the deserving Cheeseright closed with excellent figures of 5 for 45, two or three crucial chances went to ground and with the extra over at their disposal Westbury reached the target in the 45th over.
